TRUDY HARDMAN – ARTIST STATEMENT

I spent 25 years in my bespoke business ‘The Edging Company’ a design and manufacturing rug company working with interior designers. After completing a BA in visual art at Curtin University majoring in clay and glass I then completed a Dip.Ed at ECU and taught art for the next 17 years. During that time, I followed my own art practice in hot glass (blowing and casting glass) then creating small sculptural ceramic, glass and mixed media pieces.

I now work from my studio amongst the banksia trees located in the Swan Valley. There I create birds of Australia in clay including figurative work that tie in with the balance of living and working with the flora and fauna and the environmental issues associated with it. My practice also including workshops that are environmentally based such as Herdsman Discovery Centre, Nagula Jarndu Broome, South of the River Potters Club and in my own studio, located in Swan Valley.

My overall interest lies with the balance between being a woman artist, working with the community and creating art pieces that reflect the stories of living and working in an environment that is slowly being constrained by urban sprawl. The welfare of the birds, animals and trees that surround my home is paramount to my art practice.
